MARILYN TYLER
An internationally acclaimed opera artist, Marilyn Tyler joined UNM’s music faculty in 1983 as director of opera studies. As a soloist, she performed under the baton of many of the world’s leading conductors including Leonard Bernstein, Georg Solti, Erich Leinsdorf and Charles Munch. Tyler has performed with major orchestras including the London Philharmonic, the Boston Symphony, Concertgebouw, and the New York Philharmonic. She received the UNESCO Award for the best recording of a contemporary composition for orchestra and soprano.
UNM’s opera program thrived under Tyler’s direction and her students have been the recipients of major awards and are currently appearing at such opera houses as La Scala, the Metropolitan and the Vienna Staatsoper. UNM’s Opera Theatre has been the recipient of three National Opera Association Awards. Professor Tyler served as General Director of the International Opera Academy in Rome.Professor Tyler’s Deutsche Grammophon recording of Serse, by G.F. Handel was voted best “Forever Classic” recording of the year 2009. Opera News commends Marilyn Tyler as a superb Atalanta with “an impressive range up to a brilliantly finessed high D in the final cadenza of Voi mi dite”. Professor Tyler will continue to prepare the next generation of performing artists from all over the world.
